CHRISTMAS DECOR TIPS

We are extremely excited about Christmas within the team at Design F9 this year. This year seems to be unchained by restrictions, lockdowns and separations as we return to a more promising ‘normal’. This year’s trends seem to be reflecting childhood Christmas for me, personally. At my grandma’s house all huddled under the gold and silver foil decorations randomly taped to the ceiling. The rich gold, fluffy tinsel adorning every picture frame twinkling in the light of the open fire. The red velvet table runner against the polished mahogany table under the mini, somewhat disheveled, green Christmas tree center piece. This year is evoking nostalgic memories, capturing warmth and revisiting or creating family tradition within our homes. Golds and silvers are expected to be the highlight of the show.

be environmentally friendly

Last year felt quite Nordic with wooden decorations, parcel paper presents and crisp white snow. Those same beautiful wooden decorations are now complimented and reimagined with a more rustic, wildlife design. Imagine intricate foliage adorning the mantelpiece with woodland accents complimenting a natural wreath with various types of branches gathered from a crisp afternoon walk. Natural wreath making workshops are growing in popularity and an excellent way to add a personalised touch to your home. Our team partake in this annual activity which supports local business and is a fantastic way to kick off the festivities. And yes, the wreaths make it back home with us, even after an overindulgence of mulled wine…

Consider your impact

When decorating it is important to consider your free space, we don’t want to overwhelm our atmosphere with packing in every ornament accumulated in our loft. Although we are not suggesting to bin your precious decorations you may want to be more selective in what is displayed for maximum effect. The Christmas tree and mantelpiece would be beautiful center stage with a clear floor. Compliment your minimalist haven by opting for a slimline tree. Artificial trees against a wall or corner with only front facing branches attached may also work. Replacing existing soft furnishings with festive cushions and throws can add impact without clutter. Don’t get carried away with suffocating your tree with every ornament you own and filling every surface with elaborate Christmas scenes, unless that fills your heart with joy of course.

Add essences

Trees and baubles aren’t the only things that can make our home feel Christmassy. Candles and wax melts can provide the smell of an open fire, baking gingerbread people and fresh pine. Warm fairy lights along shelves or surfaces can add a festive glow with touches of foliage. Golds and silver tones can be introduced into your space with accents such as napkins, trimmed cushions and strategically placed ornaments. Our top tip is to think about the existing features in your space, perhaps those photos of you sipping cocktails on the beach doesn’t match the vibe…

Enjoy!

In summary, do what warms your heart but do step back and visualise your impact frequently. Try to decide a theme before starting and place items carefully to avoid overcrowding your space. Also, break out the mulled wine early for that extra Christmas buzz…
