Like many things in life, interior design trends and styles change over time. Whilst this can be overwhelming, the good news is that having so many trends to consider, means that you have lots of inspiration when it comes to decorating your home.

If you are thinking about making 2021 the year for change within your home, then why not take a look at 5 of the trends that we think will make an impact this year.

Go bold or go home!

For a good while now, neutral has been the safest way to go when it comes to picking colour schemes in our homes. However, with 2020 firmly behind us and spring around the corner, it looks as if the reign of grey is coming to an end and 2021 is making way for brighter hues and bolder shades! Think rich blues and greens, touches of yellow and Abstract Prints! If you’re not feeling brave enough to change the colour of your furniture or your walls, you can start small, introducing Coloured Cushions and accessories that you can switch up and move around easily, is a quick and simple way to add colour to a space.

Mid-century is back!

Vintage style might not be for everyone, but we have to say that we love the classic look, the colours, and the forms that come with this particular time in style. If you want to bring some mid-century back into your life and your home, then why not think about adding a statement piece of furniture, reimagined in tactile fabrics like this Set Of 4 Danish Chairs Hand Upholstered In Recycled Sheepskin or perhaps a sculptural piece like Soho Homes Marble Tisbury Coffee Table. These can be beautiful investment pieces that will last a lifetime.

plenty of plants.

Who doesn’t love a vase of freshly cut flowers to perk up a space? Plants are a fantastic way to add colour to your home. The lush, green nature of them can brighten up any space. Not only this, but plants are also ideal for helping to clean the air in your home, which is especially useful at a time when most of us are spending the majority of our time in our homes.

If you don’t consider yourself particularly green fingered then not to worry, there is always something for everyone.

Succulents are a drought resistant plant that are a fantastic go-to for those who want something that doesn’t need constant attention. If the responsibility of looking after a living plant is too much, then artificial plants are an easy and sustainable way to add a touch of nature to the home. Some great examples include this Artificial Lazy Days Bouquet or these handmade faux flower arrangements by Mrs Wicker. Then of course, we should also mention the latest flower trend hitting our Instagram feeds, dried flowers. These Dried Bouquets by Mud Urban Flowers are particularly pretty in our opinion.

reduce, resuse, and recycle.

Sustainability, to most people, is a huge consideration when it comes to the choices in our everyday lives. Interior design is no different. Ensuring that the choices we make, be that in decorating, furnishings or furniture having as little an impact to the environment as possible, is a burden most of us carry. The great news is that designers and inventors are always searching for new innovations in sustainable materials. This captivating Large mycelium ceiling pendant is sustainably made and entirely decomposable and a great example of eco friendly design.

When it comes to furniture and décor, we here at Design F9 LOVE an upcycle project! Instead of adding to the ever-growing mountain of card board, polystyrene, and shredded paper that is inevitably going to come with a new purchase, we suggest opting to upcycle where you can. Vintage and retro styles are on the rise again, which makes it easy enough to find unpolished gems that are just waiting to be given a new lease of life.

Alternatively, we highly recommend (when the shops re-open) getting lost in an emporium or a local antiques bazaar. Imagine stepping inside Mary Poppins magic bag - It might look like bric-a-brac from afar, but there is always a story to be found, and when styled in the right way, it can add character and history to your interiors.

Of course, we have to shout out to eBay and Facebook Market Place! you don’t have to spend a fortune to find a treasure, and in some cases, you don’t have to spend anything at all!

immersive decor.

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) might sound like something for the future generations, but it’s already a phenomenon that is huge in the commercial realms. AR and VR can bring a exciting new dimension to our surroundings, attaching information to existing environments, or creating new immersive worlds that are completely imaginary.

Technology and our homes go hand in hand and it won’t be long before we start seeing a lot more innovative tech in our interiors. One of our personal favourites, is the designer Sofia Willemoes, who pairs AR with her stunning wallpapers and murals. When using her custom app ‘Smart Walls’ to view her designs, you can discover exciting interactive elements and characters that aren’t visible to the naked eye. Picture trees swaying in the wind, birds gliding past, and stationary characters brought to life on the walls in your home.
